Earlier last week The Darkness released their third album Hot Cakes. Most of you probably only remember The Darkness for their hit "I Believe in a Thing Called Love". Although here in the states the vast majority wrote them off as a one hit wonder, they did quite well in the U.K. for some time. Now, hardly anyone I talk to knows of their second album One Way Ticket to Hell...And Back and for mostly good reason. Their second album was good, but nowhere near the solidarity of Permission to Land. After what might have been a devastating break up (The lead singer broke off from the band and formed his own while the rest of his mates formed another, both if which aren't any good), The Darkness returns.
Hot Cakes is a fun album to listen to. The track "She's Just a Girl, Eddie" makes you want to sway and bounce up and down while listening to the singer consoles Eddie, their drummer. (I could write a whole 'nother blog about how much I relate to and love this song, so maybe I'm a little biased). "Forbidden Love" is a goofy love song about...well forbidden love. It reflects on the feelings we have when there is something we're not allowed to have and how sometimes thats the only reason we want it. The song "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" is definitely a departure from the fun love blokes. Its good, but not particularly great. The two best tracks on the album are "Nothings Going to Stop Us" and "Everybody have a Good Time". They have the same feel and rhythm as most of the tracks on Permission to Land and are a blast to listen too. I recommend that you go to Youtube and check them both out.
I loved the album and I'm so happy that they're back in the saddle rocking hard. The roll of the dice gives the album 9/10.
