Okay, so all of a sudden, and by that I mean within the past year or two, folk style music has seen a surge of popularity. I'm not sure how I feel about it. With bands like Mumford and Sons, Of Monsters and Men, and The Lumineers getting widespread attention, we see a return to 1960's pining and poetry. All of these known bands are now the face of hipsters and the trendy anti-trend, or conforming to the non-conformists. Here's my view on those bunch of idiots (NSFW).
I blame Mumford and Sons for all of this. When their album Sigh no More came out in 2010 in the states, you couldn't escape it if you tried. I was going kinda crazy. I got the album and started listening to it. It took me all of one listen through to realize that they all followed the same formula (with the exception of Winter Winds). The formula is as follows: Start with single acoustic guitar, then add vocals, then add 1-2 aux guitars (typically bass and banjo, cause it ain't folk without no [expletive] banjo), more intense vocals, more intense guitars, AAAAAHHHHHAHHHAAAAHHHAAAHHHHAAAHHHH, last chorus (which is super intense), end. I feel like this engineer has a little bit more insight to creating things. I haven't bothered to get their new album and with these other bands, I doubt I ever will.

Of Monsters and Men, I couldn't get through the album. I got bored. Their single "Little Talks" is a lot of fun to listen to, but that was the only song I could listen to all the way through. Their male and female vocals are both really good, but it just wasn't a sauce I could add to my folk-y spaghetti.

The Lumineers (I was expecting this, imagine my disappointment) are better than either of the above. The album is very very simple, but not in the same repetitiveness that Mumford and Sons had it. I'm not sure exactly how they recorded it, but every song sounds like it was a live performance done in some back alley gig house (Like Muse or Velour if you're familiar with the Provo/Orem music scene). It makes the album feel more personal, cause you can hear all the background sounds and even the drummer giving the crowd and band instructions.

My favorite folk-y band that as come out recently is of course none of these, I'm too much of a real non-conformist to conform to non-conformity. So eat that. The band I like best out of this folk-y retardation into the past (see what I did there), are The Weepies. They have a few albums out and I thoroughly enjoy all of them. I highly suggest you get their stuff. The female vocals are the more common of the two vocals and are, for the most part, the better. The guy on occasion does something awesome, like in the track "World Spins Madly On" from the album Say I Am You. That was actually the song that turned me onto them.

So whether you like folk or not, it fits autumn weather quite well actually. And the weather gives you an actual reason to wear a scarf and flannel and whine about being single or relationship problems.
